Top 5 Hacks for Saving Time, Money, and Reducing Waste in the Kitchen

Here at ToBox learning about new ‘life hacks’ and at home DIYs is one of our favourite things to do and while some are pretty quirky some of them have genuinely blown our minds and have made our day to day lives significantly easier! After all, who doesn’t want to save time, money and reduce waste?

We’ve compiled a list of our Top 5 kitchen hacks that you can use day to day in your kitchen to reduce waste, and save yourself a bunch of time, and money.

1. Freeze everything before it goes bad

This one is honestly our favourite! If your fruit or veggies are about to go bad, cut them up and put it in an airtight bag in the freezer so you can use it in smoothies later (we love our frozen apple and spinach smoothies out here~).

Didn’t finish the last few drops of wine in your bottle (and you don’t own one of our wine preservers yet)? Pour the rest of it into ice cube trays and use it for added flavour when cooking at a later date.

You can do the same with leftover juices and use the flavoured ice cubes to add an extra bit of flavor any cool beverage.

2. Boil your water in an electric water kettle before cooking

One of our favourite things in our kitchens is our hot water kettle. Boiling water on the stove or in the microwave takes way longer than using a kettle, so it’s a great time saver when making tea, coffee, hot chocolate or anything else that requires hot water.

It’s also great to use to pre-heat water to boil before cooking on the stove. Rather than waiting for the water to boil in the pot on your stove when cooking, prepare it in the kettle then pour it into your pot. You’ll save minutes!

3. Get extra life out of your empty spread jars

There always seems to be a bit of leftover spread at the bottom of the jar that you just can't seem to get out with a knife. You don’t have to throw this away though.

If you’re stuck with some leftover peanut butter, and a little bit of milk and spices and shake the jar thoroughly to turn the remaining peanut butter into a delicious peanut sauce. For jam jars, just add some olive oil and vinegar to make a delicious salad dressing.

Don’t forget our favourite though; leftover nutella? Add in some milk and cocoa and shake and you’ve got yourself a quick and easy nutella flavoured hot chocolate. Bonus if you add ice cream. ;)

4. Only cook as much spaghetti as u need! 1 hole = 1 serving

One thing I think we’re all guilty of is cooking way too much spaghetti (or sometimes even not enough). You know how the spaghetti serving spoon has a hole in the middle of it? We always thought that was so water could drain through, but boy were we wrong!

The small circle hole in spaghetti spoons can actually be used to measure out a perfectly sized single serving of spaghetti. Meal for one, one spaghetti hole’s worth of spaghetti. Meal for six, just measure out six holes worth of spaghetti. Mind blown!

5. Separating Egg Whites and Yolk with a bottle

This one not only blew our minds but is really fun to try, and even more exciting when you pull it off. It takes a little bit of practice, but it's the most efficient way of removing the egg yolk from the white I’ve ever tried. Just takes a bit of practice to master.

What you do is get an empty water bottle and gently squeeze the bottle (pushing out some of the air from the bottle), then place the top of the bottle (the mouth?) against the yolk. If you relax your hands while still holding the bottle up to the yolk properly, the yolk will jump up into the bottle leaving you just the egg white. Science!
